Taxonomy Update - Wednesday 10/21

Here is the latest update of the taxonomy. In the spreadsheet I made the following updates:

  1. Updated Discover app categories, both nested and flat options
    • Added 'Lifestyle' category
    • Noted alternate labels of 'Life' or 'Living'
    • Noted that religion and education may not belong under lifestyle
  2. Competitive information on the 'lifestyle' category / label (on the competitive view tab)

Prototype v1

Variation 1: NYPR Discover

This direction focuses on user's intended activity as a playlist organizing mechanism.

Variation 2: NYPR Companion

This direction makes larger topics the playlist organizing mechanism, and has ideas related to identity capture and text based search functionality.

Discover Design Revisions v1

Hi WNYC team! We’re happy to be showing you the first pass at some new functionality and improvements on the Discover portion of the WNYC app. We’ve put together an Invision prototytpe, as that seemed to be the most coherent way to let you experience this.

You can access the prototype here (https://invis.io/NP4CY73YK).

Feedback

We’re looking for a few specific things when it comes to feedback from you:

  • How well are these new pieces of user interface accomplish the goals of each feature?
  • Does this feel like an appropriate evolution of the Discover section from an aesthetic perspective? Why or why not?
  • Anything that we missed or overlooked?

Well, that’s a lot of stuff. Looking forward to your thoughts. Happy Wednesday!

WNYC and Discover Taxonomy, v1

Attached you'll find Dave's first take on the taxonomy effort. Within the document, you can browse the following:

  • Worksheet 1: 2 Draft Taxonomies for Improving Discover. We're using the first version, with three levels, in our redesign effort for now.
  • Worksheet 2: Competitive Taxonomies from NPR and the New York Times
  • Worksheet 3: Current State Taxonomy - we're still doing analysis here, but you can see the form that analysis will take
  • Worksheet 4: Candidate Facets: This is our early thinking on the larger WNYC taxonomy effort

We'd welcome any questions or feedback you have on this document by 5PM on Friday, October 2nd. Dave may be weighing in from the lovely vistas of Spain in the meantime.
